Accurate Quantification of Radioactive Materials by X-ray Fluorescence: Gallium in Plutonium Metal

چکیده

Two XRF specimen preparation methods were investigated for quantifying gallium in plutonium metal. Gallium in plutonium was chosen here as an example for demonstrating the efficacy of wavelength dispersive XRF for quantifying radioactive materials. The steps necessary to handle such materials safely will also be discussed. Quantification of plutonium samples by a wellestablished aqueous specimen preparation method resulted in relative precision and accuracy values of well less than 1%. As an alternative to the aqueous approach, a dried residue method was studied. Quantification of gallium in samples using this method resulted in relative precision and accuracy values an order of magnitude worse, but the method is faster, safer, and generates less waste than the aqueous process. The specimen preparation details and analysis results using each method will be presented here.

ACCURATE QUANTIFICATION OF DRIED RESIDUE THIN FILMS USING X-RAY FLUORESCENCE, C.G. Worley, G.J. Havrilla, pp. 392-397

An XRF specimen preparation method was developed to quantify the concentration of gallium in plutonium metal while minimizing the risk of contaminating the instrument with radioactive material. To ensure that homogenous specimens are examined, plutonium is dissolved in dilute HCl and HNOJ prior to analysis. In the preliminary work here, non-radioactive aqueous gallium standards were prepared, a...

Aging Effects in Plutonium Metal Pose an Interesting Puzzle

Aging effects in plutonium metal are of metallurgical and practical interest. The Dismantlement Program has provided a wide variety of plutonium samples from a large number of retired nuclear weapons , enabling the development of a comprehensive database of materials properties as a function of age. Data are providing a substantive statistical foundation for these properties as well. The primar...

QUANTIFICATION OF GALLIUM IN DRIED RESIDUE SAMPLES BY XRF: AN IMPROVED SAMPLE PREPARATION METHOD FOR ANALYZING PLUTONIUM METAL, C.G. Worley, pp. 421-426

A novel XRF sample preparation method was investigated to quantify the concentration of gallium in plutonium metal and minimize the possibility of contaminating the instrument with radioactive material. To prepare homogenous specimens and to add an internal standard, the plutonium must first be dissolved. The currently established method then entails removing the plutonium by chromatography and...

Improvements in Xrf Specimen Preparation Using the Dried Residue Method: Gallium in Plutonium Metal

Preparing dry specimens from liquid samples for XRF analysis avoids introducing caustic or hazardous liquids into the instrument. Several modifications were made to a dried residue specimen preparation method for quantifying gallium in plutonium metal in order to improve the method accuracy and precision. Ion exchange chromatography was utilized to remove the plutonium prior to casting the drie...

Radioactive Sample Effects on Edxrf Spectra

Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) is a rapid, straightforward method to determine sample elemental composition. A spectrum can be collected in a few minutes or less, and elemental content can be determined easily if the detector has adequate energy resolution. Radioactive alpha emitters, however, emit X-rays during the alpha decay process that complicates spectral interpretation. Thi...
